Testing Hours / Schedule
Failures & Retests
The state of Idaho requires emissions testing only in Ada county. This program was started in 1984 and is focused on improving air quality in Idaho. More than 50% of vehicle air pollution is generated by only 10% of the vehicles. This means that by finding the vehicles that emit the most pollution and having them be required to be repaired the air quality will improve significantly.
The fee for an emissions test in Idaho is not set, though the fee is capped at a maximum of $20. The testing station you visit will determine what their fee is so you can call ahead and make sure you are willing to pay what their specific fee is.
There are some exceptions of vehicles where if your vehicle fits into one of these categories it is exempt from having to take an Idaho emissions test. If your vehicle was manufactured in 1964 or earlier it is exempt from having to take an emissions test. If your vehicle is powered by electricity and no gasoline it is exempt. If your vehicle was manufactured less than one year ago and you have been the only owner it is exempt from having to take an emissions test.
