The emissions testing program in the state of Illinois began in 1990 with the federal Clean Air Act Amendments which required emissions to be tested in large metropolitan areas that did not meet the federal air quality standards.  The emissions test tests whether your vehicle’s emission control system works properly.  The goal is to require vehicles that are emitting too many pollutants into the air to be repaired which will improve the overall air quality in the state of Illinois.

In Illinois, vehicle emissions testing must be performed every two years on vehicles that were manufactured four years ago or more.  In the event that you purchase a used vehicle, if that vehicle’s emissions certificate has expired you may need to get the vehicle an emissions inspection once the new registration for that vehicle is received.

Emissions testing in Illinois is required for certain zip codes in Northeastern Illinois and Metro East St. Louis areas.  Below is a table that shows the areas that require emissions testing:
