Michigan Eco-Friendly Driving Incentives

Last updated on April 26th, 2018

The state of Michigan does not currently require residents to pass emissions testing in the state. There has been much debate about adding the program to the state, but it still has not passed. After some testing was done in Detroit in 1996, it was found out that the air quality in Detroit was very low. Federal regulators are still fighting for the state to require emissions testing, but so far to no avail.

There are incentives for those who choose to drive eco-friendly, and we should all do our part to save our environment. Even though Michigan does not require emissions testing, vehicles will still have to go through inspection, but if your vehicle is an alternative fuel vehicle, you will be exempt from these inspections. Alternative fuels include:

  • Electric cars
  • Compressed natural gas
  • Diesel fuel
  • Propane

You can also receive a federal tax break if you drive eco-friendly. The following vehicles are eligible for the tax break:

  • Hybrids
  • Electric cars
  • Plug-in hybrids
  • Diesels
  • Alternative fuel vehicles

Some Michigan auto insurance providers also offer discounts for eco-friendly drivers. Some discounts include:

  • Hybrid vehicle discounts
  • Alternative fuel discounts
  • Economy vehicle discounts
  • Low-mileage discounts
  • Pay as you drive discounts
