The State of Nebraska does not have any vehicle emissions test requirements at this time. However, Nebraska-registered vehicles must complete a vehicle inspection that consists of a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)  and an odometer check.

Requirements for Passing a Nebraska Vehicle Inspection

The only way to not pass a Nebraska Vehicle inspection is if:

  • The vehicle’s VIN number does not match the Title or Registration
  • The vehicle does not have all of its necessary mechanical components to run

If a Nebraska resident seeks to get a vehicle registration and the vehicle falls under one of the following categories, it must get inspected in order to get registered:

  • Vehicles getting a Salvage Title
  • Vehicles getting a Non -Transferable Title
  • Motorboats
  • Cabin trailer
  • Mobile homes
  • Vehicles getting registered through the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles – Motor Carrier Services Division
  • Vehicles getting a title requested when being sold by a manufacturer to a manufacturer-franchised dealer
  • Vehicle sold at a manufacturer-authorized auction where the buyer is a licensed manufacturer-franchised dealer
  • Trailers getting their title converted after having a prior utility-trailer registration and VIN number to a commercial-trailer registration, and there is no change of ownership. The owner must provide the previous Nebraska registration documentation
